Pushing the Boundaries of Materials Science

Our Story

The Origins of Sindri Materials

For years, graphene has been heralded as a revolutionary material, yet its promise has remained largely unfulfilled due to fundamental challenges in manufacturing. Sindri Materials was founded to overcome these barriers, driven by the conviction that ultra-high-quality graphene could be produced at scale—without compromise.

Our journey began with an obsessive pursuit of understanding every variable in graphene production. It took over 1,000 experimental growths, countless system redesigns, and a relentless attention to detail to uncover the key principles that would shape our approach. Through this process, we recognized that the true bottleneck in graphene’s widespread adoption wasn’t just production—it was reliability, reproducibility, and the ability to bridge the gap between research and real-world application.

This deep investigation led to critical discoveries in ultra-high-quality graphene synthesis, establishing key principles that shaped the direction of subsequent research in the field. These insights formed the foundation for what became a landmark Nature publication, which validated new methods for achieving graphene with atomic precision. As a co-first author, Dr. Christopher DiMarco’s findings provided the framework for this breakthrough, driving the research that followed.

However, the vision for Sindri Materials was never about a single result—it was about tackling the larger, unsolved challenges that remained. Sindri was built to push beyond the known, applying deep experimental knowledge, engineering expertise, and new ideas to take graphene manufacturing to the next level.

Beyond the science itself, Sindri Materials was born from a broader frustration with the status quo—a research culture where critical advancements were often published but not reproducible, claimed but not scalable. Too many breakthroughs in graphene lacked the rigor needed to translate into real impact. Sindri exists to change that.

We operate in the space between academia and industry—a place where deep, exploratory research meets real-world engineering, where discoveries don’t just exist on paper but lead to transformative technologies. At Sindri, we believe that true innovation is not just about pushing scientific boundaries—it’s about turning breakthroughs into commercially viable products that create real value. By combining cutting-edge R&D with scalable manufacturing and a pragmatic go-to-market strategy, we are building not only breakthrough graphene solutions but also a sustainable business positioned for long-term impact.

Today, Sindri Materials is applying these principles to cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), semiconductors, and next generation materials, setting a new standard for how graphene is produced and used.

With a foundation built on precision, perseverance, and scientific integrity, we are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

The Meaning Behind Sindri

A Name Rooted in Innovation

Our name, Sindri, is inspired by Norse mythology. Sindri was a legendary dwarven blacksmith, renowned for crafting objects of unmatched precision and quality—including Thor’s hammer and Odin’s spear. But what made Sindri truly remarkable wasn’t just his craftsmanship—it was the materials he worked with, materials that defied the known limits of reality.

Much like its namesake, Sindri Materials is dedicated to mastering an extraordinary craft: producing flawless graphene with uncompromising precision.

Graphene is often described as a material of the future, a substance that seems almost impossible—until now. With its unmatched strength, conductivity, and atomic thinness, graphene is science fiction come to life. The objects Sindri forged in legend had properties beyond imagination, just as graphene holds the potential to unlock applications and performance never before seen.

At Sindri Materials, we don’t just research graphene—we manufacture it. Like the blacksmith of myth, we take raw materials and transform them into something extraordinary. We are bringing science fiction into reality, pushing the boundaries of materials science to create the technologies of tomorrow.

This name is more than a reference—it is a reflection of our mission, our craftsmanship, and our commitment to shaping the future.

Our Vision

Engineering the Future, Inspired by Science Fiction

At Sindri Materials, our vision is more than just technological progress—it’s a philosophy that shapes how we approach scalable graphene manufacturing. We aren’t just producing graphene; we are rethinking how materials are engineered at unprecedented scales while maintaining atomic precision.

The Space Elevator – The Ultimate Graphene Challenge

In the 1990s, the space elevator emerged as a theoretical concept—an engineering feat so ambitious that it seemed impossible. The idea: a massive tether stretching from Earth to space, replacing the need for traditional rockets. The problem? The material required simply did not exist. No known substance had both the strength and lightweight properties necessary to support such a structure.

Then came GRAPHENE.

For the first time, a material existed with the theoretical strength and atomic perfection needed to make the space elevator a reality. Yet, there remains a challenge: scalability. A material this precise must be manufactured at an unimaginable scale—not just spanning two-dimensional space but extending into three-dimensional structures, all while retaining its extraordinary properties.

At Sindri Materials, we see the space elevator as the ultimate metaphor for graphene manufacturing. It represents everything we strive for:

- Scaling production to extreme volumes without sacrificing quality -
- Mastering the transition from 2D synthesis to 3D structures -
- Maintaining atomic precision at industrial scales -

While the space elevator remains a distant aspiration, it serves as a guiding principle for how we approach graphene production today. Every challenge we solve—whether in cryo-EM, semiconductors, or next-generation materials—moves us closer to unlocking the full potential of graphene.

We aren’t just imagining the future. We’re engineering it.
